KIRKPATRICK

I'm a Bermuda-based filmmaker, creative director and co-founder of Burnt House Productions. From the depths of the ocean to destinations around the world, I create films, imagery and original stories that explore the extraordinary, from luxury resort campaigns across the Caribbean to feature films for international television.

It started on the rocks. Falling Off The Rock, a series of cliff-jumping films I made with friends, reached viewers around the world and showed a side of Bermuda most people never see. Since then I've co-directed the award-winning documentary In the Hour of Victory and shot features for the Lifetime Network.

But the ocean is where I feel most at home. Bermuda is ringed by centuries of shipwrecks, and I never tire of filming them, from the Civil War blockade runner Mary Celestia to the Constellation, the wreck that inspired The Deep, and the Cristóbal Colón, the largest shipwreck in our waters. One of my most unforgettable moments was freediving beside a tiger shark.

Underwater filmmaking is a craft of patience and precision. Light fades and colour drains away the deeper you go, so every frame has to be earned. It means reading the current, controlling buoyancy, managing every breath and holding the camera steady in a world that never stops moving.

Much of the work happens before the camera rolls. That means planning around tides, weather and visibility, choosing the right housing and lighting, and knowing marine life well enough to anticipate a moment rather than chase it. When it all comes together, the footage feels effortless, and that's the point.

Burnt House Productions started on Burnt House Hill, but the ambition has always been bigger. Whether I'm beneath the surface or on location halfway around the world, the goal stays the same: to tell stories that make people stop, look closer and see the extraordinary.
